Ridgeway® were pleased to assist Shandon Park Golf Club with their recent bridge deck replacement at the signature 10th Hole.
The existing structure was in dire need of repair, as the compacted soil and stone aggregate on top of rotting sleepers had become dangerous, with failure imminent.
A solid, anti-slip surface was the preferred option as the steel beams beneath had suffered significant surface corrosion under the saturated sleepers. The solid GRP Top sheet would provide some longevity and shelter to the existing beams whilst making sure the golfing members were safe underfoot.
203mm x 55mm GRP Profile Channels were used as cross beams to support a 40mm Deep Solid Top Grid and bolted down to the existing steelwork. With the channels spaced at 850mm centres, the bridge can now accommodate a UDL of 5.0 kn/m2 L/200, as well as an achieved Point Load of 2.5kn/L200, making it suitable again for motorised buggies. In addition, significant load has been removed from the bridge, with the combined load on the steels reduced from approx. 8 tonnes down to just under 1 tonne total weight.

Commenting on the recent work, Head Greenkeeper Allen Gallagher is delighted with the outcome.
“We had already used other GRP products around various parts of the course, such as hi- vis step nosing’s and open grid panels for temporary ditch crossings. The structural beams proved very straightforward to work with, and being lightweight in comparison to its steel equivalent, it made handling a lot easier. Being able to install ourselves is another additional cost saving and has removed what was a major headache ahead of our centenary year in 2026. Overall, we are very pleased with the outcome on our signature hole.”
